When Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment, He answered that it is to love God with all our heart, mind and strength. But He added this: “the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself'” (verses 37-39). My brother, my sister, the Pharisee asked Jesus which one, of all the commandments is the greatest. But Jesus provided two and said the SECOND IS LIKE IT, which means it is like the first one. And the most important is that in those two commands, He not only states what we are to do, but also how to do it. Yes, to love our neighbour as we love ourselves is the natural result of our loving devotion towards God. The Bible says “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need, but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?” (1 John 3:17). And as you read further, the Word of God says, “If anyone says, ‘I love God’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen” (1 John 4:20). How do we love our neighbours? Is it according to our personal standards or the society standards or are our convictions based on the Word of God? My friend, as Christians, we should always position our ourselves according to Word and wonder if we really act according to the Lord’s commands. Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
