Today’s passage says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” (John 3:16-17).
Can one be a Christian without being selfless?
This is an interesting story I read. One day, a teacher gave a boy this equation to solve: ‘your mother baked a pie and there are seven people in your home, your parents and five children. What part of the pie would you get?’ The boy replied: a sixth.’ The teacher said: ‘you don’t know your fractions… Remember, there are seven of you!’ The boy answered: ‘Yes, sir, we are seven, but you don’t know my mother… she would say she didn’t want any pie to allow all of us to have more.’
My brother, my sister, we all have the heart of mother and we know that when a mother is really in all her senses, she will deny herself so much to give her family. Yes, the heart of a mother is a heart that gives itself to something or someone else, selflessly. And the Lord has placed this heart in each of us. It is indeed His own heart. It is this heart that led him from His throne of glory to the earth. It is this heart that led Him to the cross…
My friend, the Bible says: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). So let me ask you this question today: who are you living for? Nowadays, most people are more concerned about themselves than anyone: they go to church only to receive, but never give themselves, because only their concerns, their desires, their wishes need to be satisfied. Such an attitude is not that of a Christian, as the true Christian goes to church to fellowship with the saints, and to praise and worship the Lord above all else. My friend, maybe Jesus seems too far away for you to understand what He has done. So, observe your mother who is or was close to you and see what she had to give up for you to be in this world, bearing in mind that some women refuse to have children, as some people refuse Jesus…
So, is it possible for someone who is a Christian to continue making selfish and interested choices, living only for themselves? No, being a Christian involves self-sacrifice. In other words, it’s living for something that goes beyond our own person, to live for someone else because we recognize the high price He paid so that we can enjoy the privilege we have today to be called Christians. Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
