Today’s verse says: “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” When we expects something we have not yet seen or that we want, the way we react is different from how we expect something we have already seen. My brother, my sister, that is the reason why today’s believer do not value Christ as much as they should! Many behave with Him as a gift they have received once, so they can no longer be surprised, and that is the reason why they are indeed not surprised! You see, the Bible shows us Isaiah announcing Christ and even John the Baptist preparing the way for the Lord (Isaiah 40:3 ; John 1:23). However, Paul made it clear that the church of Christ is there to proclaim Christ : “He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ” (Colossians 1:28). But today, many believers tend to proclaim themselves rather than proclaiming Christ, as their time of prayer is only about them (the list of their request is so long that they forget they can worship the Lord too), their testimony of Christ is only about them (all they can tell you about Christ is what He has done for them, but they have nothing to say about what they have done for Him), their walk with the Lord is only about them (they are in faith because God loves them, but only their mouth say they love God, while their actions are still far from what is pleasing to God). My friend, a true follower of Christ is someone who has died for himself and like Paul He can proclaim “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). The prophets came to announce that Christ, the Messiah, was coming… and He did come. The apostles were there to show us that Christ has indeed come and He is returning soon. It is not because He has already come that we should become negligent and walk as if we have already seen it all. No, my friend, Christ is real, live everyday knowing that He can return anytime soon, and therefore listen to the apostles who are asking you to set your eyes on Christ alone… When He comes back, He is not coming to do miracles anymore, He is not coming to deliver you anymore, He is not coming to heal anymore… He is coming to judge the living and the dead (2 Timothy 4:1)!
