Here, like the Corinthians, all believers are called to examine and test themselves to see if they really are in faith. My brother, my sister, just as you would get physical checkups to avoid any surprise sickness to grow within you, the Lord urges you to give yourself spiritual checkups too because you should look for a growing awareness of Christ’s presence and power in your daily life. That’s is why today’s verse says: “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realise that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test?” Yes, my friend, by examining yourself, you will know if you are a true Christian or your are just labeling yourself ‘Christian’ like an impostor would do. If you are not actively seeking to grow closer to the Lord, you are drawing farther away from Him. It is as simple as that. You see, most of the time we put our trust in many things and trust people. For example, when someone is sick, he takes medicine because he believes it will help him/her. The same, when we take a bus to go somewhere, because we trust the bus driver knows the route well and because we believe he will get us to the place we want to go, sometimes we even start sleeping without worrying about the driving or the driver. Now, if the driver decides to stop for five minutes, most people in the bus would wait patiently on him to resume driving. If something is blocking his route, most people would wait patiently for the road to clear and the driver to resume driving… we just trust that he will take us to that place we want to go! But, let’s the truth be told my friend: this kind of faith does not save us and actually does not take us anywhere. The only faith that saves us and that takes us somewhere even in this life is the one we have when we truly realise that Christ Jesus is in us. And this faith is the one we need to examine all the time to ensure that, since we have boarded the Christ-bus, we still trust that He is taking us to the place we hope to arrive, and therefore even if we have not reached that destination yet, we can still close our eyes and sleep while Jesus is driving us there. Unfortunately, when they board the Christ-bus, many believers become impatient when the things they are hoping for are not coming immediately. My friend, today, examine the state of your faith and realise that Christ is in you… so be still and wait patiently on Him to take you there. Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
