In our churches today it is very common to see believers who act like some of the believers in Galatia who might have been in Jerusalem at Pentecost and received the Holy Spirit: they know exactly that they have not received the Spirit of God because of their good deeds, any works or whatever, just like those Galatians knew they did not receive the Spirit by obeying the Jewish laws. Yet, they behaved like fanatics who were trying hard to follow the Jewish rules. My brother, my sister, some rules we have set can easily draw us far from the Lord, while we are still doing good deeds. Yes, some disciplines and service (Bible study, prayer, etc.) will definitely help us grow spiritually, but we should be careful not to prioritize those routines in a way to make them become a routine rule and therefore to hinder the Holy Spirit’s action in us. That is also why we should always ensure we have not become like one of those Galatian believers who were more fascinated by miracles in the church than they were in hearing about the true Gospel and Jesus Himself. Nowadays, many believers and followers of Christ act as if a magic spell had been cast on them, running from churches to churches in search of miracles. My friend, let me stress the fact that your Christian life has to be based on Jesus Christ alone! Seeking for miracles and wonders will make you step back in your faith and in your walk with the Lord, because as you are looking for signs, you will inevitably start ignoring the greatest miracle of your life: the Cross! It is Jesus dying on the cross to redeem you that is the greatest miracle of your life, and that alone should give you a reason to seek to know Him for what He did for you and who He is rather than looking for earthly signs. And the Lord is recalling you this morning that it is “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit” (Zechariah 4:6). This means that, as Christians, we must realise that our spiritual growth is due to God’s work in us by His Spirit, it is not due to the fact that we are following special rules or routine. So, focus on Christ alone, for He is the foundation of your faith. Stay blessed in Jesus’ name.
